Autism Coverage

There is currently a bill before the Utah State Legislature that would mandate insurance companies to cover the cost of autism treatment. There has been heated opposition to this move on behalf of the insurance companies, but from personal experience this treatment is a life saver. We have done as much therapy as we could with Matthew and thankfully he has come very far considering that at age three he only said 10 words and used 10 signs. Early treatment provides the best outcome in the end thus reducing the strain on public resources in the future lives of these autistic individuals. There came a point, however, where your finances can only go so far in getting such treatment as speech therapy, Applied Behavior Therapy, Occupational Therapy, etc. I am elated that someone could present with such a bill and urge everyone out there to do their part in supporting the measure Clay's Law. Please email your local representative and state senator. For those who live in our area, email Representative Paul Ray and Senator Sheldon Killpack at

For an example this is what we wrote:

"Dear Sen Killpack and Rep Ray, We live in your districts and have a 7 year old son with autism. We are writing you in support of Clay's Law. We have experience with many of the therapies that autistic children receive and know that they work. Our son Matthew can now read, write, speak, and generally sit still in many settings thanks to the therapies that this bill would have insurance cover. Without insurance coverage, these therapies cost incredible amounts that only the wealthy could afford. The more these services are available to those with insurance, the less costs will be occurred from state services. Thank you for your time. Please vote yes on Clay's Law."

Thanks in advance to everyone who supports us!!!!!

Cool Becca. I hope this bill passes for you guys. I have 4 friends here in Texas that have children with Autism ranging from mild to severe. 3 of the 4 have their children in private theropy and they rave at how much help it is and how good their children are doing. I have seen great changes in all of them because of the theropy they recieve. Unfotanily friend #4 only gets the help through the school and her son is not as well off. He is the severe one. I have heard through all these friend of how expencive the theropys are. One luckly has the money to pay for them (her husband plays for the Texans) another one of them did a very large fund raiser to help her son get the theropy and then the 3rd on has great insurance that helps pay for some theropy. Her daugter is the least severe out of them all. Any way I think this is a great bill and needs to be passed. Keep up the good work Becca and Arron.
